Wretch 32's New Album a Lyrical Triumph

Wretch 32 has just released his new Album, FR32, which has already made waves across the nation. Specific attention has been given to songs such as 'His and Hers' and 'Time' which are lyrically raw and honest.

The essence of the Album was to portray the freedom that Wretch feels he now has as an artist. That freedom is clearly heard through his lyricism and his experimentation with conventional structures.

Although this album has only been out for a couple of days, it is already considered a key contender for next years Mercury Award. Wretch mentions in 'Time' that he hasn't won a Grammy yet. Well that seems like it might change soon...

Sylvia Young Theatre School visit a massive success!

Last Week we visited Sylvia Young Theatre school to speak to students about what ELAM has to offer. One student had this to say about the experience:

"'Last Thursday ELAM college came to speak to some interested students about what they have to offer. Their courses are Film & Media, Music and Games Design. The head and a former student who now works at ELAM came to speak about their courses and their past/present student successes which were incredible! The reason why ELAM is my first choice is due to how connected with the industry they are. It’s unbelievable to see how many big companies/record labels and artists support the college. Something else I loved was the work experience. If you’re on the music course for example, ELAM sends you to a company such as Warner Music, Universal, Sony etc to learn from and even be noticed by the best! Something I know all parents will be happy to hear is that it is compulsory to take maths or English A LEVEL, which I admit I’m sure will come in handy!'

A huge thank you to Sylvia Young, we thoroughly enjoyed being in your wonderful building, surrounded by such amazing students!

The European Women in Games Conference 2017 paints a bright future for the industry

Our seventh annual conference earlier this month highlighted the key role women play in the European game industries as designers, makers, thinkers, educators, players and everything in between.

The extra time afforded by the new two-day format allowed for more diverse subjects and speakers than ever before. We had panels on making and designing games, social media and personal branding, VR, business, HR and increased discussion about the educational pipeline.

This was fitting, as our host was the wonderful East London Arts and Music – a progressive educator with a strong commitment to diversity – on the first day of its new academic year and its new games design course.

ELAM's first integrated partnership in the UK for Game Design

Multi-award winning games studio and creators of the Total War franchise, Creative Assembly, has partnered with 16-19 Academy, East London Arts and Music (ELAM) to deliver a new Game Design course.

This is the first integrated partnership in the UK for Further Education Game Design that will see students following an industry-developed curriculum. The course gives students the opportunity to learn game-making on a holistic level, encompassing games art, mechanics, programming, storytelling and sound alongside mentoring, masterclasses, workshops and more, from Creative Assembly’s experts.

Certified as outstanding in all areas by Ofsted, ELAM places central importance on being in touch with the creative industries, bridging the gap between education and industry. Over a quarter of ELAM’s students are from disadvantaged backgrounds and over 70% are from a BAME background, a demographic that is currently underrepresented in the games industry.

Tim Heaton, Studio Director at Creative Assembly, said:

“As a leader in the UK games industry we are committed to educating the future games development talent of tomorrow, and driving innovation through diversity.

“ELAM is working to address the shortfall in the UK’s creative skills shortage and we look forward to sharing our expertise that come with 30 years of making world-class games to help them achieve this.”

Charlie Kennard, Principal at East London Arts and Music, said:

"The UK games industry is currently the 6th largest in the world, employing around 25,000 people, yet the education system is not preparing students with the specialist skills the industry requires. Creative Assembly join other ELAM partners, including Universal Music UK and Abbey Road Studios, to give trainees the opportunity to regularly engage with the industry and gain a level of professionalism, raising the standard of undergraduates before they go to university.”

The UK games market is thriving, with games generating £2.96bn in 2016, 1.3 times the size of the video market (£2.25bn) and 2.6 times the size of music (£1.1bn) . UK games rank among the most popular in the world , with Creative Assembly’s Total War™ series seeing a franchise record-breaking monthly average of 1.2m global players in 2017.

ELAM and Creative Assembly are encouraging students with an interest in games to sign up to the new Game Design course here.
